Dr. Linda Honet and the physician extenders of the HDC team diagnose and treat Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and early forms of Melanoma. Not infrequently, patients will be referred to Mohs Surgery for more advanced surgical care and treatment for skin cancer, especially ones located on the head and neck. With a variety of effective and targeted treatments, our providers work to completely remove the cancerous area through surgical procedures and/or other appropriate therapies as necessary.

There are three, most common types of skin cancers, with each type being distinguished by the specific skin cells that are affected. These common forms of skin cancer are: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. Remember, when detected and treated early, these skin cancers can be and will be cured. Even Melanoma can be cured when caught in its early stages.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common skin cancer among Americans. This form of cancer develops in the deepest layer of the epidermis, which is the first layer of skin. Notably, this form of skin cancer is found on skin that has been exposed to and damaged by the sun, such as face, ears, scalp and chest. Squamous cell carcinoma more commonly appears on areas that were exposed to sun as well, such as the face, arms, legs, chest, and back. However, it can actually develop anywhere on the skin. Melanoma is the most life-threatening form of skin cancer, where when left undetected, it can more readily spread inside the body. According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), one American dies from melanoma every hour, which is a very alarming statistic. And with the increased frequency of tanning-bed use, the incidence of Melanoma is rising in the USA. Malignant Melanoma begins in the melanocytes of the skin, which are the cells that provide the skin and its moles with color. It can arise in pre-existing moles, as well as de novo, or as a new lesion on normal skin. Full skin exams by Dr. Honet and her team performed on a regular basis can help with early detection and can literally save lives.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans develops some type of skin cancer over the course of a lifetime. It is not surprising that many of our patients experience skin cancer, but with regular skin exams, diligent skincare, and compliant sun protection, skin cancer can be caught early and effectively cured with surgery. At Honet Dermatology/Cosmetic, we are extremely proud and privileged to be able to provide expert medical and surgical care to help you and your skin maintain and regain its vitality and health.
