Stranded On A Deserted Island | Sarah’s Favorite Products
Each month, we are featuring a different staff member’s favorite item picks. Stay tuned at the end of each month for some skincare pearls.
Part 6 in our series, “Stranded on a Deserted Island”
At Honet Dermatology/Cosmetic, we often talk and think about skin care products—what we love, why we love them, and why some just leave us saying, “meh”. We talk about them among ourselves and we talk about them to patients. Although taking care of skin is our job, each and every one of us is actually a little bit obsessed about makeup and obsessive about taking care of our own skin and making our skin look the best it can be. We sell a lot of products in the office and we use them, too. But the following is a list of skin care or beauty items that we can’t live without—the stranded-on-a-deserted-island kind, the can’t-live-without kind.
Sarah’s Favorites
Coconut Oil
Available at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon
“Coconut oil is a true multitasker! First, you can use it for cooking. In comparison to other cooking oils, it is your healthiest option and makes food taste great. Secondly, it can be used to hydrate your body skin to reduce premature signs of aging and sun damage. Instead of using body lotion, I love applying coconut oil after a shower because it makes my skin feel soft and moisturized the entire day. Last but not least, I use it for hair treatments. It has improved my hair tremendously. It keeps it hydrated which is so important to prevent breakage. It looks great when styled too!”
Dr. Honet Tip: “Although coconut oil is a great moisturizer, remember that it is an oil and may cause acne breakouts. If you are prone to acne and folliculitis, using coconut oil or any oil is not recommended. And for use on the face, stick to moisturizers that are formulated for facial skin because of the potential for acne breakouts and allergies or irritations.”
Aquaphor® Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment
Available at CVS, Target, Rite Aid
“I personally love using Aquaphor® on my lips, it keeps them moisturized and looking great. I love the fact that it is fragrance-free, because I have relatively sensitive skin and avoid heavily fragranced products. I also apply Aquaphor® on my elbows, knees and feet to keep them from cracking and it works great here, too!”
Dr. Honet Tip: “Aquaphor®is an amazing healing ointment with a multitude of uses. Not only is it great for every part of the body, but it is safe and gentle enough even for babies and seniors. It is so safe and gentle that it can be applied directly on eyelids and lips for extra moisturization and to act as a barrier to protect the skin against the harsh elements of the environment. In fact, most dermatologists use if as the ointment of choice as a part of wound care after a minor skin procedure in the office.”
